Stainless steel wire ropes are produced using different grades of stainless steel rods and are usually available in two structures. for lower diameters stainless steel wire ropes are usually available in 7X7 structure which is in fact made by weaving 6 stands around the metal strand core. in higher diameters however, stainless steel wire ropes are available as 6X19 structure with stainless steel core. Stainless steel wire ropes are available usually in two grades of G304 and G316. these two grades of stainless steel wire rope can bear equal loads or in other words have equal tensile strength. however, the main difference between these two grades is caused due to the extra 2% Molybdenum added to the chemical compound of stainless steel 316. as a result stainless steel wire rope G316 is not only very resistant against water and humidity as G304 is, it is also resistant against some chemicals such as Chlorides. there is one more advantage to stainless steel wire rope G316 compared to stainless steel wire rope G304. in many industries a magnetic field is generated due to the rotational movement of some shafts or electric motors. this magnetic field can cause stainless steel G304 some magnetic interest and therefore can cause some problems. however, stainless steel wire rope G316 has no Magnetic interests.
Mechanical properties of stainless steel wire rope can vary and can be considered more or less relevant from one factor to another to choose the right grade of diameter of stainless steel wire rope for a certain application. while some of the mechanical properties of stainless steel wire rope such as WLL (Working load limit) and MBL (Minimum breaking load) are highly dependent on the size of stainless steel wire rope, some other such as tensile strength and hardness are solely dependent on the chemical compound and the percentages of Metallic elements as well as the heat treatment process applied on stainless steel wire rope. as far as mechanical properties are concerned, both grades of 304 and 316 stainless steel wire ropes have almost equal mechanical details since they have mostly the same chemical compound. in addition to the mentioned factors, weaving structure of stainless steel wire ropes in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and Singapore can have a great impact on some of the mechanical properties such as flexibility and abrasion resistance. as opposed to the very different structures used to product carbon steel wire ropes, there usually are two normal structures of 7X7 and 7X19 and one non rotating 19X7 stainless steel wire rope.
